It’s OK If You Would Like To Improve Your Smile

A couple years ago, USA Today reported a survey of single adults in the United States. The focus of the article was one what singles consider the “must have” traits in a person they would consider for a long-term relationship.
Trust and a sense of humor rated high for both men and women, but something else was on the top of the list for both groups. According to the survey, 58 percent of men and 71 percent of women listed “teeth” as their top must have.
To be more specific, the article explained that this meant nice teeth, although it did not specify what this might mean. It’s fair to say that this is something that could vary from person to person.
But we also think it’s reasonable to think that if you aren’t happy with your teeth then that can affect how other people perceive your smile, too.
At Oregon Smile Care Center, we want our patients to feel confident about their smiles. We offer cosmetic dentistry for this purpose, and we have seen that veneers are one of the services that can make a dramatic difference in a short amount of time.
We will explain what veneers are, what they can do, and how you can get them a little later in this post. For now, just know that you can schedule a consultation with our dentist if you live in or near Salem, OR, if you are interested in finding out if veneers could give you the smile that you want to see in the mirror.
You’re Only Human
Some people are concerned that cosmetic dentistry can make them seem vain. We don’t see it that way.
Wanting to look your best for yourself isn’t a bad thing. In fact, we have seen how it has improved the confidence of our patients.
Something as simple as a whiter smile (which is something veneers can help you attain) can change how a person holds his head or how she speaks with other people. When you feel better about your teeth, it can be easier to look others in the eye and to share your smile.
Fashion magazines occasionally do pieces looking at changing fashions. The point being is that outfits that made people feel good about how they looked change with time.
Believe it or not, something similar can be said about teeth. Here are a few examples of the ways our ancestors tried to make their smiles look better.
◼︎ Archeologists have found ancient Egyptian teeth with holes drilled through them. Wires were threaded through the holes to tie the teeth to neighboring teeth. This is believed to have been an attempt to straighten teeth.
◼︎ The ancient Mayans also drilled holes in their teeth, but for a different reason. They put stones (like jade) in their teeth for decorative (think cosmetic) reasons.
◼︎ In the Middle Ages, people carved what might be considered the first dentures out ivory and animal bones.
We could go on, but you get the point. We have proof that for much of recorded history people have wanted their teeth to look nice.
Veneers: A Modern Way To Improve Smiles
Today, people want their teeth to be straight, white, and evenly spaced. There are many ways to accomplish this, but veneers may be the only service that can do all three things at the same time.
Veneers are thin cover or shell that can be bonded to the front of your teeth. This has the effect of hiding your teeth while presenting a natural-looking smile to the rest of the world. Think of it as your smile 2.0, to use computer language.
Veneers can be used to make crooked teeth look straight, close gaps between teeth, turn yellow or discolored teeth white and bright, and restore chipped or broken teeth to their full size and shape.
To get veneers, you should start by visiting Oregon Smile Care Center and a consultation. If you are a good candidate for veneers, we can remove a thin layer of enamel from the front of your teeth. This will create the space for your veneers to be bonded in place.
Impressions of your teeth are sent to a dental laboratory where veneers will be custom-made to fit on your teeth and crafted to your specifications.
When your veneers are ready, you’ll return to our office and we will bond your veneers in place. You may be surprised at how different your smile can look with this simple procedure.
And with proper maintenance, your veneers can last for decades.
