Don’t Wait For Weeks To Get Your Smile Back
How long would you be willing to go without teeth?
The rest of your life? Six months? How about less than a day?
If you are in the less than a day group, then you may want to know more about Same Day Smile, which is available at Oregon Smile Care Center.
Ideally, none of our patients would need this service. As much as we enjoy living and working in The Beaver State, we know it’s not perfect, and some patients will lose their teeth.
The American College of Prosthodontists estimates that more than 30 million Americans are missing at least one row of teeth. Many of them are missing both rows.
If you should find yourself in this position, you should call our dentist office in Salem, OR, as soon as you are able.
Your Teeth Replacement Options
Replacing teeth is not a new thing. Humans have been doing it for thousands of years in a number of ways.
Ivory, animal bones, animal teeth, rocks, seashells, and teeth that were taken from dead bodies are just a few of the many things that people have used to replace lost teeth. Today we have developed natural-looking materials that can give people the appearance of a complete set of teeth even if those teeth replacements are made in laboratories.
Here are your choices today:
For a long time, this was the best option for someone who was missing all their teeth or who had to have their teeth removed.
Modern dentures can be made to look very natural, and they may be visually indistinguishable from real teeth. That is, assuming the dentures stay in place.
One of the major drawbacks of dentures is that they can slip out of position when you are trying to speak or when you are trying to eat. You can eat some things with dentures, but multiple studies have shown that people with dentures only have about one-fifth the bite force of people with all their teeth.
That’s a big drop-off, but at least, you can smile, even if you can’t eat anything that you would like.
▶︎ Implant-Secured Dentures
This is a step up from traditional dentures. You can get this at the time that you get your dentures, or we can convert your dentures later to fit onto a series of dental implants.
For the sake of readers who may not be as familiar with dental implants, they are prosthetic roots for missing teeth. They are titanium cylinders that are embedded into your jawbone, just like the roots of your real teeth.
Part of the reason they are made of titanium is that bone will bond directly to this metal. As your mouth heals, the bone will create new tissue that will form around your implants to hold them securely in place. When you have a series of implants, this gives you a stable and secure foundation to support your dentures.
A patient with implant-secured dentures can feel confident that those replacement teeth will remain in place during everyday activities. Perhaps more importantly, you can regain nearly all of your original biting and chewing power.
This may not seem like a big deal at first, but when you realize that you really can order anything that you want from the menu.
Getting a set of dentures can take up to 12 weeks. We realize that most patients do not want to go that long without any teeth.
For this reason, we offer temporary dentures that you can wear until your permanent dentures arrive.
If you go through the dental implant placement procedure, you could be waiting for several months for your implants to heal before your permanent teeth replacement can be attached to the implants.
This is another case where we understand that you would rather have something “tooth-like” to show if someone wants to take a picture during this recovery period. Ask us what we can do about getting temporary teeth replacements to wear until your mouth is ready.
