Athletic Mouthguards To Protect Your Smile
So the mouth guards that we do are specifically designed to prevent concussions. I know people, they see in the news the NFL's really freaking out about concussions. For us, we just wanted to have a product for people, whether it's kids or college students that play football or any athletic event where you could possibly get a concussion. But for us it's mainly about football. That was kind of the big one, and that was what kind of drove us to the guard that we do choose.
It's a little bit of a process. It's not just a put it in some hot water and bite into it, but if you have a kid who has had a concussion in the past, or is more prone to that type of an injury, whether it's through a doctor's recommendation due to spine alignment or, there's different reasons why people have come in. We do do a full work up. We look at the spine, we look at the teeth orientation, we look at the jaw relationship to kind of figure out where they need to be placed as far as when they're biting together and kind of the physics of it, and we give them a guard that's going to prevent concussion.
The helmet itself is designed to prevent concussion up here, and we're looking at the blow down here that maybe they land or get hit, whether it's basketball, football, lacrosse, hockey, all of those sports that we commonly see someone coming for a mouth guard. They're just stronger. They last longer, they're custom fit, so they do all the great things as far as the teeth protection that they're designed to do as well as adding in that ability to stop your kid from having a concussion.
When you are on the field of play, the last thing you want to be worrying about is your athletic mouthguard. That is what can happen when your mouthguard doesn’t fit correctly. If your mouthguard doesn’t fit, it can not only affect your breathing, but it can also rub the skin on the inside of your mouth raw. All of these problems are just things to distract you from your assignments on the field. That’s why we bring you into Oregon Smile Care Center and have your Under Armour mouthguard custom-fitted to your teeth and only your teeth!
Dry Mouth Treatments In Salem, OR
Having a dry mouth can lead to dental problems such as tooth decay and gum disease because it allows bacteria to run rampant. How we treat your dry mouth at Oregon Smile Care Center depends on a number of factors, but generally the treatment of a dry mouth zeros in on three areas. Those areas include taking care of the medical conditions that are causing the dry mouth, preventing possible tooth decay and gum disease, and increasing the presence of saliva in your mouth.
Dry mouth's really kind of difficult, because a lot of patients come in and we have to figure out the reason they have the dry mouth. So if they're systemically compromised ,a lot of times there isn't much that we can do. We can give them some saliva replacement type things like Biotene, and Colgate makes a couple of good products that we often give patients samples of.
If it's something that's caused by a medication that they're taking, then a lot of times we will work with their doctor to say hey, this medication we think is causing some dry mouth, which can lead to all these other things, as far as dental decay and tooth loss, is there a different medication that we can try and see if their dry mouth goes away.
And other times there really isn't anything you can do. You know patients who have gone through any sort of chemo and radiation to the head and neck, unfortunately, we try to do things that don't necessarily get rid of the dry mouth, but protect the teeth. So fluoride treatments and seeing them more often, because patients who do have a dry mouth tend to get cavities quicker, faster, bigger, and we really, really, really strive to try and keep that down.
And so dry mouth for me is one of the most frustrating things that we deal with, because there isn't anything I can do about it and then most of the time the patient really can't do much about it either. You know we offer solutions and they may or may not work for an individual patient, so.
