3 Steps To Maintain Your Family’s Oral Health

As much as they can get on your nerves, you would not trade your family for anything in the world.

Your kids definitely keep you busy between school and practices. You may feel like you never stop moving from the time you get up until you lay down at the end of the day.

In the midst of the hustle and bustle of daily life, you also want your family to maintain its oral health. Oregon Smile Care Center wants to help.

We can do that if you follow our three-step approach, which includes routine cleanings and examinations at our dentist office in Salem, OR.

Step 1: Brush Your Teeth

That much you already know, but do you know the American Dental Association’s recommendations about brushing your teeth?

Think two-by-two. You and your kids need to brush your teeth for two minutes two times every day.

When you brush, you need a few things with you. First, you need a fluoride toothpaste. Fluoride is a mineral that can repair and strengthen the protective enamel on your teeth.

Second, you need a soft-bristled toothbrush.

You also don’t need to use as much toothpaste as commercials may lead you to believe. A pea-sized squeeze is enough to scrub all your teeth on all sides.

When you are finished brushing, be sure to spit out the toothpaste, and brush your tongue to remove more bacteria and freshen your breath.

Step 2: Floss Your Teeth

Flossing or using some kind of interdental cleaner should be a daily activity for you and your children.

This is important for your overall oral health because you can’t clean between your teeth or under your gumline with your toothbrush. Dental floss or other cleaning tools allow you to remove bacteria and plaque from those harder to reach places.

If you use dental floss, break off about 18 inches. Wrap one end around one middle finger and the other end around the other middle finger.

Hold the floss with your index fingers and thumbs, and work it between all your teeth and under your gumline by “hugging” the floss around each tooth.

It doesn’t matter what kind of dental floss you use as long as you use it every day. You can get waxed or unwaxed floss. You can get flavored or unflavored floss. You can get thin, regular, or thick floss.

Whatever kind works best for you is what you should use.

If you either can’t or won’t use dental floss, ask us about other tools you can use to clean between your teeth.

Step 3: Visit The Dentist

A good guideline to follow is for every member of your family to visit our office twice a year for routine cleanings and examinations.

We also know that your time is valuable, and we will make every effort to reduce the amount of time that you spend in our office. If we can schedule all of your children for a cleaning at the same time (in different chairs), then we will do our best to make that happen.

So what happens during a routine cleaning and examination? We will take a close and thorough look at your mouth.

With our digital X-rays, we are able to look beyond the surface of your teeth. X-rays allow us to identify changes in the alignment of your or your children’s teeth, and that can help us prevent problems before they get too big.

We also use our Spectra Caries Detection Aid. With this system, we are able to find tooth decay earlier than ever. The Spectra uses a fluorescent light to reveal problem spots that we may not see with our eyes alone.

And of course, all of our patients (including your family) receive a complete professional cleaning.

We will remove any plaque or tartar that has built up between visits. We will floss between your teeth, and we will polish your teeth to keep them looking their best.

If we find any problems, we will let you know what needs to be done to fix it. When you have a plan of action, you can keep your smile looking great.
